Sports notebook:CV wins include sweeps of LC, Ferris
Central Valley and Freeman in the South Division and University in the North hold early leads in American Legion AA baseball.
Freeman (6-1) won its first five games, including an 8-0 victory over CV behind the shutout pitching of Abe Mega. And on Tuesday, Mega beat East Valley 10-3.
But a loss to Medical Lake dropped the team out of first place and behind CV (9-1).
Central Valley rebounded with wins – 4-2 in eight innings and 12-3 over East Valley – and leads the division. Among its wins were sweeps of Lewis and Clark and Ferris, Blake Bledsoe with 11 hits. The team also swept Whitman County and shut out Shadle Park 3-0 on Joe Arlt‘s one-hitter.
University (6-2) has moved to the North Division where it ran off five straight wins before losing 4-3 to North Central and 6-4 to Mead. Defeats dropped the team into second place, a half game behind Gonzaga Prep.
“In AAA Legion, the Bandits (5-1 in league, 8-4 overall), that includes players from University, hold the league lead after a sweep of the Pullman Patriots 13-3, 11-9 and Monday’s 9-4 win over the Cannons.
The Cannons (2-3, 5-6), made up of players from the other Spokane Valley Schools, is third in the five-team league.
Valley softball begins
Spokane Valley Girls Softball Association summer season got underway this past week.
Home Run Construction won its first two games in 16U Division joining BNSF as early unbeatens.
During an 8-2 win over Einstein’s Car Wash, Baily Riggin was 2-for-3, including a home run, while Keely Nelson and Ryleigh Riggin each doubled and drove in two runs.
Five of the 11 teams in the 14U Division won early, with Old Country Buffet atop the league with a 2-0 record.
McCoy’s Pitching and Towey Ecological are both 3-0 in the 12U league. Baily Towey and Jessi Mitchell from Towey’s each struck out six and hit home runs to lead a win over Awardmasters.
Other highlights included Erin Wallman‘s three-run triple for Sir Speedy and Commercial Battery came from behind for its first win, 15-14 win over Rowand Machinery.
McCoy’s Pitching and Cuda Buffalo each won two-run games to improve to 2-0 in the 10U Division. McCoy’s handed F&F Foundations its first loss, 18-16 and Cuda Buffalo edged Victor Lumber 15-13.
Valley baseball update
Midget Division teams in Spokane Valley Baseball got their seasons going in earnest last week.
Jim Frazier Pro and Trophy Shop from Pasadena Park rolled to a pair of easy wins and Sunrise pulled out two close ones to both start 3-0.
Jim Frazier has outscored its opposition 64-2 in its three wins. Carson Driskill and Brady Bergman combined for 32 strikeouts and allowed only one hit in two of the victories.
Bergman was 4-for-5 in one game with three doubles and he homered and doubled in the other to drive in six runs. Driskill doubled, tripled and homered to drive in six runs.
Austin Luhn hit three triples and drove in 10 runs in two of the games, including one in which Hunter Wells (who was 5-for-6 and scored six times) and Tyler Stavnes combined on a 16-strikeout no-hitter.
Sunrise won by 8-7 and 8-6 scores. Pitcher Jacob Newton drove in the winning run in the seventh inning against Spokane Recycling for one win and the team scored twice in the top of the seventh to beat Autocraft in the other.
In another game, Conley’s Pete Chandler drove in six runs during a 19-8 win.
“Pee Wee team Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Assoc. (Summit) improved to 3-0 in the American Division, half a game over McDonald’s and Pizza Hut.
Mark Spear Homeselling is now 3-0-1 to lead Spokane Athletic Supply (2-0) in the National. Colin Sueffels went 4-for-5 with a triple and Nate Tesdahl hit two doubles in Mark Spear’s third win.
Elsewhere, Ethan Frazier was 4-for-6 and Jordan Crouch 4-for-5 for Pizza Hut. Josh Quartararo went 3-for 4 with a double and triple. George Velis DDS’s Rachel Lunstroth was 4-for-6 and drove in four runs.
