Spokane Valley

Woman rescued by paper carrier

Around 4 a.m. on June 8, Arlene Schlosser went outside her Spokane Valley home to leave a food donation on the porch. Schlosser, 90, suffered a fall and was unable to get up.

“She was lying in the gutter for maybe an hour, hour and a half,” said Ed Deiter, Schlosser’s son.

Though it was later discovered that Schlosser only suffered minor scrapes from the fall, at the time she wasn’t capable of getting up, and was disoriented.

“She was confused about who helped her,” Deiter said.

A Spokesman-Review carrier, who wishes to remain anonymous, found Schlosser lying prone in the street. He stopped and asked her if she needed help. When it became obvious that she was unable to move, he picked her up and carried her back into the house.

Because Schlosser was confused after her fall, it took some time before Deiter was able to discover exactly who it was that helped his mother.

Deiter is grateful that his mother was found by someone honorable. “If somebody else had come along … (she was) vulnerable in that position,” he said.
