Locally: NIC’s Cavan selected to national squad

North Idaho pitcher Kelcey Cavan was selected to the United States of America/National Junior College Athletic Association softball team that will compete this summer in the World University Games.

Cavan, a two-time first team All-Region 18 selection, will join 14 other current and former softball standouts that will travel to Bangkok, Thailand on Aug. 11-17 to participate in the games.

During her two years at NIC, Cavan led the Cardinals to back-to-back Region 18 titles and back-to-back national tournament appearances. She will be playing for the University of Washington next season.

College scene

Twenty-eight local athletes from Whitworth have been named Northwest Conference Scholar-Athletes.

“Chris Bozo and Larsen Agee have been named the Community Colleges of Spokane Male and Female Scholar-Athletes for the month of May.

Bozo (Ferris High School) was second on the team in home runs (6) and RBIs (37) last baseball season.

Agee, a freshman from West Valley, participated in cross country and track and field and maintained a 3.9 grade point average last year.

Golf

Two men and three women have committed to play golf for Whitworth next season.

Connor McCracken (Eagle, Idaho) and Ryan Young (Mill Creek, Wash.) will join the three-time defending Northwest Conference champion men’s squad, while Kaylin Carlson (Clarkston), Sophie Sestero (Boise) and Ruthie Parsons (Bremerton) will tee it up for the women in the fall.

Men’s basketball

Three area players have committed to Eastern Oregon University and coach Ryan Looney.

They are Beau Azadganian from Gonzaga Prep, Nick Ambrose from Central Valley and Nate Bligh from Coeur d’Alene, bringing to six the number of area athletes playing for EOU.

They’ll join Jeremy Templeton (Ferris), Kyle Janke (West Valley) and Josh Landsverk (Shadle Park) on next year’s roster.

Azadganian is a 6-foot-5 forward who averaged 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Bligh, a 6-3 guard, averaged 17.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.

Ambrose, a 6-5 forward, signed with the Mountaineers after leading the Bears with a 15.8 scoring average.

Looney, also a CV graduate, coached Eastern Oregon to a 23-8 season, best in school history.

Templeton (Ferris) was honorable mention all-conference and Derek Brown (Mt. Spokane) was named to the all-defensive team.

“Recent Lewiston High School graduate Andrew Packwood has signed a letter of intent to play for Lewis-Clark State College. Packwood, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound forward, averaged nearly 12 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game last season for Lewiston.

Women’s basketball

Curlew graduate Nichole Miller has signed a letter of intent to attend Lewis-Clark State College and play for the women’s basketball team next season. Miller, a 6-foot forward, finished her high school career as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 2,118 points.

Soccer

Former Lewis and Clark goalkeeper Evan Gaul has signed a letter of intent to play for Shoreline Community College in the fall.

Volleyball

Washington State assistant volleyball coach Ken Ko has been promoted to associate head coach.
