Haase finishes second
Junior golfer Justin Haase proved why it was important not to give up at a Callaway PGA Junior Series event June 18-19 at the Las Vegas Country Club in Las Vegas.
After playing the first seven holes at 4-over-par, the Lewis and Clark sophomore birdied five of the next 11 holes to finish the first round at even-par 72. Haase matched that total in round two and finished with an even-par 144, good enough for second place in the boys’ 13-15 age group.
Haase’s 144 placed him fourth among all boys and girls ages 13-18.
Baseball
Coeur d’Alene’s Shea Vucinich had four hits, leading the Spokane Dodgers 18-U team to an 8-5 win over the Washington Wave in the Palouse Summer Series championship game Sunday at Washington State University.
Ferris’ Andrew Kittredge picked up the win for the Dodgers, who went 6-1 in the tournament to claim first place.
DeSales’ Michael Richard was named most valuable pitcher while Coeur d’Alene’s Alex Reyes was named defensive player of the tournament.
Legion baseball
Spokane Northstars pitcher Dave Hennessey threw a complete-game no-hitter while striking out 10 in the Northstars’ 13-0 rout of the Spokane Cannons in an AAA American Legion game last Tuesday at Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field. Niko Sotolongo, who caught Hennessey’s gem, hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for the Northstars.
•Phil Joy went 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, leading the Spokane Bandits to a 9-2 win over the Glacier Twins at the Dwight Church Memorial Sunday in Lewiston. The Bandits took third place. Evan Ewing earned the win for Spokane, striking out seven in the complete game.
Volleyball
The Spokane Splash 15-U team, playing in the 16-U division, finished in the top 20 out of 75 participating teams at the AAU Junior National Tournament June 17-20 in Orlando, Fla.
The Splash 15-U team is coached by Jill Benson and Bekah Hornor.
