Athol hair salon marking 1st anniversary Sunday
Attitudes Salon is celebrating its first anniversary July 1. We first discovered Attitudes, and the proprietor, when I thought the sign said “Saloon.” Well, nary a drop was to be had, but I did get a great haircut.
Proprietor Jill Tustian uses a lot of code, which for guys is king of hard to understand. “Foil weave” for instance. One was in progress while I was there. My recommendation to the lady with aluminum foil in her hair: Don’t go near any electrical appliances. As far as waxing is concerned, the victim has to let the hair grow out two to three weeks before treatment. We haven’t seen many ladies that will appear in public with two weeks’ growth when they have the appearance of sandpaper.
Appointments can be made for Tuesday through Saturday by calling 683-8108.
New steakhouse in town
Athol’s newest and maybe best business is the “Saddle up Grill and Steakhouse.” Suz and Howie White started this restaurant just four months ago. Already people are raving about the innovative breakfast specials, and if that weren’t enough, out back is a 500-gallon barbecue smoker, where they turn out smoked prime rib and succulent beef ribs, slathered with Suz’s secret barbecue sauce, served with homemade barbecue ranch-style beans. Featured in between is a giant burger that has a 12-ounce pattie with all the fixin’s. For large groups, call for reservations at 683-2879.
Hats off to volunteers
We ran into Doug Harms at the Legion this week. Doug is the consummate volunteer. Vets need a ride to the Spokane VA Medical center? He drives them. A vet is stranded? He gives them a few bucks. If there isn’t any money in the Legion Post 149 emergency fund, he gives his own. This man, along with several others we wrote about recently, just keeps on giving.
When we encountered him, he was behind the bar trying to figure out where everything was. It turns out that the longtime couple of Shirley Hyke, City Council member, Legion Club manager and all-around volunteer, retired recently, along with her husband Richard, also a class guy and volunteer. Doug was full of praise for this couple that has given so much to the community.
Athol Days ahead
Athol Days will be coming up Aug. 12 this year for those who like to mark their calendar, featuring the usual street parade and lots of other activities.
