Royals 1, Angels 0: At Anaheim, Calif., Jorge De La Rosa won for the first time since May 13, Mark Teahen singled home a run in the third inning and Kansas City beat Los Angeles to complete a three-game sweep. Kansas City has won four straight for the first time since July 4-7 last year and at 14-11 is assured of a winning month for the first time since July 2003.
White Sox 5, Devil Rays 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Andy Gonzalez and Jim Thome homered to back Jon Garland’s strong pitching and lead Chicago past Tampa Bay. Gonzalez hit his first career homer – a two-run shot off James Shields in the fifth inning. Two pitches later, Thome hit the 482nd of his career for a 5-0 lead.
Orioles 4, Yankees 0: At Baltimore, Roger Clemens was denied his 350th victory by the Orioles, who used a four-run sixth inning to beat New York. Clemens blanked Baltimore through five innings, but his bid fell apart under a barrage of hits in the sixth, including a three-run homer by Aubrey Huff.
Athletics 13, Indians 7: At Cleveland, Jack Cust had a career-high five RBIs, Shannon Stewart finished with four hits and Oakland beat the Indians. Cust hit a three-run homer and Stewart had a two-run drive for the A’s.
Blue Jays 5, Twins 4: At Minneapolis, Gregg Zaun hit a two-run homer and Toronto overcame four errors to beat Minnesota. Toronto designated hitter Frank Thomas went 1 for 2 with two walks and stayed at 499 career home runs.
Rangers at Tigers, ppd.: Texas’ game at Detroit was postponed by rain. The game will be made up on Sept. 11 as part of a day-night doubleheader in Detroit.
