Top 25: Georgia Tech upends No. 8 North Carolina
Thaddeus Young scored a career-high 25 points and Javaris Crittenton handed out 11 assists to help Georgia Tech beat No. 8 North Carolina 84-77 on Thursday night at Atlanta.
Losing consecutive road games in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time in three years, the Tar Heels (24-6, 10-5) missed a chance to hold onto a share of first place in the league following Virginia’s win over Virginia Tech.
Anthony Morrow added 18 points for Georgia Tech.
Brandan Wright had 22 points to lead North Carolina. Tyler Hansborough added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels.
(6) Memphis 78, UTEP 67: At El Paso, Texas, Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 21 points and Jeremy Hunt added 19 to help the Tigers (26-3, 15-0 C-USA) beat the Miners (14-15, 6-9), securing Memphis’ 18th straight victory.
Virginia 69, (21) Virginia Tech 56: At Charlottesville, Va., Sean Singletary scored 17 points and the Cavaliers (20-8, 11-4 ACC) gained sweet revenge against the Hokies (20-9, 10-5), beating Virginia Tech and moving into first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Women
Nicole Soulis and Kati Harty scored 12 points apiece to help No. 21 Wisconsin-Green Bay beat Loyola of Chicago 78-60 at Chicago. Natalie Berglin, Rachel Porath and Erin Templin each added 10 points for the Phoenix (25-3, 15-0 Horizon League). Loyola (7-19, 5-10) got 19 points from Maggie McCloskey.
