NASCAR NEXTEL CUP
UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400
Site: Las Vegas. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 3 p.m.); Sunday, race (FOX, 1 p.m.). Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway (D-shaped oval, 1.5 miles, 20 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 400 miles, 267 laps. Last race: With crew chief Robbie Reiser back home in North Carolina on a NASCAR-enforced absence, Matt Kenseth drove the Roush Fenway Racing Ford to the front and his veteran crew gave him a series of sparkling pit stops, including a very fast one near the end of the Auto Club 500 that put him into the lead for good. Kenseth, who got caught up in the last-lap melee the previous week at the Daytona 500 and wound up 27th after starting that lap in third, stayed away from trouble this time and took the lead with the fast stop during a caution 23 laps from the finish. Last year: Jimmie Johnson took advantage of a late-race caution flag, catching and passing Kenseth in a two-lap overtime sprint to the finish in the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400. Fast facts: Johnson will be seeking his third straight win at Las Vegas. … Roush Racing drivers have won five of the nine Cup events at the track. … Mark Martin is atop the point standings for the first time since September 2002. … An appeals committee upheld penalties levied against Kenseth and Kasey Kahne after NASCAR caught their teams cheating at the Daytona 500. The crew chiefs for both drivers were suspended four races and fined $50,000 each, while both drivers were docked 50 points. … Las Vegas Motor Speedway has a different look this year. The track was resurfaced, narrowed and changed from a tri-oval to D-shaped one. The bankings in the turns were raised eight degrees to 20, while the ones on the backstretch were increased from three degrees to nine. Next race: Kobalt Tools 500, March 18, Hampton, Ga.
NASCAR BUSCH
Sam’s Town 300
Site: Las Vegas. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 5 p.m.); Saturday, race (ABC, 11:30 a.m.). Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway (tri-oval, 1.5 miles, 12 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Juan Pablo Montoya spun teammate Scott Pruett to take the lead with eight laps left, then held off Denny Hamlin to win the Telcel-Motorola 200 race in Mexico City for his first NASCAR victory. Last year: Kasey Kahne held off Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick for 20 laps, then survived a two-lap shootout with Kenseth to win the Sam’s Town 300. Kenseth, who started from the pole, was gradually closing in on Kahne when David Gilliland’s car went up in smoke with two laps to go, bringing out the caution and setting up the green-white-checker finale. Fast facts: Tony Stewart returns to the series this weekend racing in the No. 33 car for Kevin Harvick Inc. His best finish at Las Vegas was 12th last year. … The inaugural race in 1997 was the first for the series west of the Mississippi River. Next race: Nicorette 300, March 17, Hampton, Ga.
NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS
Last race: Five days after being passed on the last lap and losing to Kevin Harvick by the length of a hood in the Daytona 500, Mark Martin was dominating the race at California Speedway before Ron Hornaday Jr. bumped him out of the lead on a restart with five laps to go. Former series champion Mike Skinner jumped past Hornaday into the lead before the caution flag came out and stayed out front, earning his 20th truck victory. Next race: American Commercial Lines 200, March 16, Hampton, Ga.
