Benefit shoe event planned at MAC

The Spokesman-Review

The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture are teaming up for a Nike Reuse-a-Shoe collection event.

The collection is scheduled during Family Macfest, Saturday at the MAC, 2316 W. First Ave., in Browne’s Addition. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. There is a $10 per family admission charge.

“If the Shoe Fits” event celebrates the exhibit by the same name which opened last month, runs through Sept. 16. Activities that day will include shoe-making demonstrations and plenty of hands-on shoe activities for the whole family.

Nike has a few requirements for acceptable shoes: All brands of athletic shoes are OK; no metal eyelets/grommets, cleats, or spikes; no flip flops, sandals, pumps, dress shoes or boots; and no plastic bags or shoes tied together. It just makes the processing more difficult.

The program recycles the old shoes – grinding the athletic footwear and turning it into sports surfaces. Nike began its Reuse-a-Shoe program in 1993 and since then has recycled more than 15 million pairs of shoes to resurface athletic fields, courts, tracks and playgrounds. The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System is working in conjunction with Washington State University to participate in the program.

If you miss this collection event, old athletic shoes for Nike’s program can be delivered to St. Vincent de Paul, 2901 E. Trent Ave.
