Religion Notebook: Annual Kosher Dinner Sunday at Temple Beth Shalom

Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th Ave., will present its 66th annual Kosher Dinner Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The congregation will serve 1,200 pounds of beef brisket, 3,000 potato knishes, 360 pounds of carrots, appetizers, side dishes and desserts.

The afternoon will feature a variety of Jewish entertainment such as the Klezmer Band, Chutzpah, the Kosher Redhots and the Mavens.

Novena of Grace

St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Ave., will celebrate its 80th annual Novena of Grace Saturday through March 18.

The nine-day period of concentrated prayer will be led by the Rev. Tom Lamanna and Cindy Reopelle daily at 12:15, 3:30 and 5:15 p.m., except for Sundays, when the first Novena will be at 12:30 p.m. to accommodate regular Sunday services.

The Novena dates to 1613 in Goa, India, when St. Francis Xavier cured a boy who had been disabled from birth.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered 45 minutes before each service, and anyone wishing to receive the Sacrament of Anointing the Sick may do so at all services on March 17.

Concerts

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present Ringspiration 2007 Sunday at 4 p.m.

Along with the handbell choir, the concert will feature music from brass and organ performers.

“The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present James Twyman, an author and peace troubadour today at 7 p.m.

The concert is part of the Season of Peace and Nonviolence.

“St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 6905 N. Country Homes Blvd., will present the choir of Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday at 7 p.m.

The choir will perform music from Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Mendelssohn and more.

Films at Heritage

Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will present a travel and adventure film, “The Real World of New Zealand,” Sunday at 2 p.m.

The film will discuss the history, beauty and opportunities for adventure of the country.

The church will also present “Patrick of Ireland” on Wednesday.

The event will begin with a supper of soup and bread at 5:30 p.m.

Anniversary celebration

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its church charter Sunday at noon with a lunch at the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute, 4000 W. Randolph Road.

The lunch will include turkey with stuffing and gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans.

The celebration will also feature reflections of the members of the church and an audiovisual presentation.

The cost of tickets is $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-11, and free for kids 5 and younger.

St. Francis of Assisi, 4420 N. Jefferson St., will present a spring luncheon and card party Tuesday from noon to 3 p.m.

The lunch will include stuffed turkey tenderloin, potatoes, salad and a surprise dessert.

St. Patrick’s Day party

Catholic Charities of Spokane will present the “Spirit of St. Patrick Party” Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Mukogawa Fort Wright Commons, 4000 W. Randolph Road.

The event will include Irish food, dancing and prizes.

The proceeds will benefit St. Margaret’s Shelter, which serves homeless women and children.
