Welliver likes chances at CdA Casino
Chauncy Welliver likes the idea of boxing at the Coeur d’Alene Casino.
The Hillyard heavyweight got his start at the Worley casino’s House of Fury, fighting in Tough Man competitions before embarking on a boxing career.
“Fighting there is like going home,” the 23-year-old said. “It’s where my fans are, it’s where I got my start. I can probably make more money fighting on the road someplace, but you have to like fighting in front of friendly faces.”
Welliver, who boasts a 30-3-4 record, headlines the card tonight at the casino in a rematch with Ohio heavyweight Chad Van Sickle (21-5-3). The pair first fought at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester, Wash., for the vacant Northwest Boxing Association title in June 2006. The pair fought to a 10-round draw.
Welliver, who has fought as far away as New Zealand, also is scheduled to fight Jason Waller at the Chez Paree Club in Carter Lake, Iowa, next month.
In the second of two main events, Sandpoint light middleweight Favio Medina (12-1-2) takes on Portland’s Michael Lucero (10-11-1).
Skyler Anderson (5-1-0), the 20-year-old heavyweight from Newman Lake, will attempt to avenge the one blemish on his professional record when he takes on James Harling, a 39-year-old from Las Vegas.
Harling won by technical knockout in Anderson’s second professional bout. The then-18-year-old was ahead on all three scorecards in the fourth round of the fight, but tired noticeably and was caught with one punch from the grizzled veteran.
In other scheduled bouts, Spokane Valley welterweight Brandon Anderson goes in search of his first professional win in three fights when he takes on Tony Jiminez of Boise. Spokane Valley’s Ty Hume makes his professional debut against Adrion Rivera of Billings, Mont.
In a women’s bout, Angie Dauenhaur of Boise takes on Jana Simms of Portland.
