Area roundup: NIC women advance at Region 18 tourney

Brittany Duerr led four teammates in double figures with 16 points and North Idaho College (20-11) routed Colorado Northwestern Community College (5-25) 78-47 in the first round of the Region 18 women’s basketball tournament Thursday at Ephraim, Utah.

North Idaho meets Southern Idaho (24-6) in today’s semifinals at 11 a.m.

Women’s swimming

Whitworth freshman Natalie Turner broke a 15-year-old Northwest Conference record when she finished second in the consolation finals in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4 minutes, 59.66 seconds at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Houston.

Turner’s effort bested the conference record of 5:01.01, set in 1992, and the school record of 5:01.17, set last season by Samatha Kephart.

Kephart, a junior, finished 14th in the 50 freestyle in 24.30, the fastest time in the conference this season.

Prep basketball

The North Star League boys and girls basketball coaches have announced their all-league teams.

In the boys, Cameron Jeffres of Clark Fork was named the most valuable player. Joining him on the team were: Mike Martin of CF; Chris Shaw, David Baker, Josiah Menzies and Austin Folnagy of Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy; Anthony Cranford and Cody Kraack of Kootenai; and Derrick Holmquist and Nick Arthun of Wallace.

In the girls, Cassie Scheffelmaier of Kootenai was named the MVP. Joining her on the team were: Hannah Nyrop of Kootenai; Cara Hayman, Lisa Carver and Krista Williams of Wallace; Bailey Hewitt and Rayna Allen of Clark Fork; Rian Miller and Saundra Curley of Lakeside; and Fawn Story of Mullan.

College baseball

Mark Castellitto and Michael Rhodes drove in two runs apiece to lead Gonzaga (10-8) to its seventh straight win, an 11-5 rally over Brigham Young (8-6) at Provo, Utah.

Gonzaga starter Josh Monroe (2-0) retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced.
