Area roundup: Idaho’s Nakashima ties for medalist honors

Fresno State’s Jennifer Shipley and Idaho’s Kelly Nakashima shared medalist honors Wednesday, but Shipley won on the third hole of a playoff at the UNLV Spring Rebel women’s golf invitational at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.

Nakashima’s Vandals captured third place in the team race, finishing behind Brigham Young and New Mexico with a score of 859.

Renee Skidmore finished in the top 10 for the Vandals, tying with three players for fifth place. Washington State’s Amy Eneroth (Mead High) tied with three for 10th place.

“Spokane County greens will start their 2007 season on the greenest day of the year.

Reservations are being taken this week for Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day opening of the county’s three golf courses.

Baseball

A.J. Proszek threw a complete game, allowing six hits and two runs and striking out 10, in the first game of a Community Colleges of Spokane 7-2, 7-1 non-conference doubleheader sweep of Miles City at Spokane Falls Community College.

Bryan Yardley finished with five RBIs on the day for CCS (6-6) and Cole Janini hit his third homer of the year in the second game. Kody Anderson of CCS added two RBIs in the first game.

Boys soccer

Evan Frobe scored in the second overtime on a pass from Christian Halloway as University downed Central Valley 2-1 in a Greater Spokane League opener at U-Hi.

In other GSL openers, Matt Miller scored the lone goal of the game on a Nick Johnson assist in the first half and East Valley shut out visiting Lewis and Clark 1-0. … Sam Palmer scored twice in the second half and teammates Erik Hauck and Ian Hartfield added first-half goals as Ferris topped visiting North Central 4-1. … Mead’s Tim Doggett scored twice and Morgan Deshazo added an insurance goal as the Panthers rolled past host Gonzaga Prep 3-0. … Jake Krueger recorded a hat trick and the Highlanders outshot Rogers 17-6 in Shadle Park’s 7-0 victory over the visiting Pirates.
