NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Kobalt Tools 500

Site: Hampton, Ga. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 4 p.m.); Sunday, race (FOX, 10:30 a.m.). Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.54 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns) Race distance: 500 miles, 325 laps. Last race: Jimmie Johnson beat teammate Jeff Gordon to win his third straight Nextel Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The defending series champion had few problems navigating his way around the track, which was under intense scrutiny all weekend because of changes owner Bruton Smith made to the 1.5-mile speedway. Johnson overcame a pit-road penalty and a minor brush with the wall to lead 89 of the 267 laps en route to the 150th NASCAR victory for Hendrick Motorsports. Last year: Kasey Kahne won the rain-postponed Golden Corral 500. It was the second victory of his career. Kahne held off Mark Martin’s late run 12 laps from the end of the 325-lap event. But Martin had to back off when his car began to slide and he was not able to challenge the leader again. Fast facts: There were only nine cautions during last week’s Nextel Cup race in Las Vegas, a testament to the skill and adaptability of NASCAR’s top drivers. … Formula One star and NASCAR rookie Juan Pablo Montoya is 22nd in the Nextel Cup points standings and trails David Ragan by seven points in the race for rookie of the year. Next race: Food City 500, March 25, Bristol, Tenn.

NASCAR BUSCH

Nicorette 300

Site: Hampton, Ga. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 8:30 a.m.); Saturday, race (ABC, 12 p.m.). Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.54 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns) Race distance: 300 miles, 195 laps. Last race: Jeff Burton nudged a spinning Kyle Busch across the finish line Saturday to win a chaotic, caution-marred Sam’s Town 300. The race had 12 cautions for 58 laps, and the postrace debate overshadowed a spectacular finish that denied Busch a victory on his home track. The repaved track made speeds high and forced Goodyear to bring a hard left tire to the track. Last year: Jeff Burton passed Matt Kenseth with 20 laps remaining and raced away to his first NASCAR Busch Series victory in four years. Burton beat Kasey Kahne by 1.42 seconds — nearly half the final straightaway — to take the Nicorette 300. It was Burton’s 21st Busch win but his first victory of any kind since he won at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., in October 2002. Fast facts: The race is dedicated to the memory of NASCAR great Benny Parsons, who died last month from complications of lung cancer. In celebration of “BP,” the Parsons family will be honored and recognized as grand marshals of the race. Parsons’ brother, Phil Parsons, a former Cup driver and current Speed TV broadcaster, will represent the family at the race. … Last week’s race was marred by a record 12 cautions. … Formula One star and NASCAR rookie Juan Pablo Montoya won the Busch race two weeks ago in Mexico City. Next race: Sharpie MINI 300, March 24, Bristol, Tenn.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

American Commercial Lines 200

Site: Hampton, Ga. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 9:30 a.m.), race (Speed Channel, 6 p.m.). Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.54 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns) Race distance: 200 miles, 135 laps. Last race: Five days after being passed on the last lap and losing to Kevin Harvick by the length of a hood in the Daytona 500, Mark Martin was dominating the race at California Speedway before Ron Hornaday Jr. bumped him out of the lead on a restart with five laps to go. Former series champion Mike Skinner jumped past Hornaday into the lead before the caution flag came out and stayed out front, earning his 20th truck victory. Last year: A spectacular four-wide pass gave Todd Bodine the lead and the momentum to pick up his first victory of the season. Bodine finished second behind Martin in the first two events of the season, losing both in overtime duels. Next race: Kroger 250, March 31, Martinsville, Va.

FORMULA ONE

Australian Grand Prix

Site: Melbourne Schedule: Thursday, practice (Speed Channel, 8:30 p.m.); Friday, practice, qualifying (Speed Channel, 8:30 p.m.); Saturday, race (Speed Channel, 7:30 p.m.). Track: Albert Park Circuit (3.30 miles, 16 turns) Race distance: 191.4 miles, 58 laps. Last year: Fernando Alonso held off Kimi Raikkonen at the Australian Grand Prix for his second win of the season on his way to a second consecutive F1 title. Michael Schumacher crashed in the 33rd lap. Although the final margin was 1.8 seconds, Alonso led by 25 seconds when the race was at full speed. Fast facts: Alonso will opening his title defense by taking the prestigious No. 1, signifying him as champion, to McLaren this season. … Alonso’s new teammate is Lewis Hamilton, a 21-year-old Englishman who is the sport’s first black driver. He has won the GP2 and F3 championship the last two years and took the seat that opened when Juan Pablo Montoya left for NASCAR. … This will be the first F1 season without Michael Schumacher in nearly two decades. The seven-time champion retired after 16 years in Formula One with most of the driver records, including 91 victories and 68 pole positions. … Kimi Raikkonen has moved from McLaren to Ferrari, filling Schumacher’s place. He was winless in 2006 after equaling Alonso’s seven victories in 2005. Next race: Malaysian Grand Prix, April 8, Kuala Lumpur.

Track: Gainesville Raceway. Last event: Former Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon set a national elapsed time record en route to his 33rd career victory, highlighting a record-setting weekend at Firebird International Raceway. Pedregon’s opening-round run of 4.701 seconds certified his 4.659-second qualifying time within the required 1 percent, making it an official NHRA record worth 20 bonus points in the standings. He then defeated Robert Hight in the final. Rod Fuller and Kurt Johnson also raced to victories in the Checker Schuck’s Kragen NHRA Nationals.
