City plans Perry St. improvements

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

The second phase of street and sidewalk improvements in the Perry Street business district near Grant Elementary School was approved by the City Council on Monday.

The council gave its OK to a $415,000 contract with Cameron-Reilly LLC of Airway Heights for construction on Perry Street from Eighth to Ninth avenues and from 11th to 12th avenues.

A low bid by Cameron-Reilly was nearly $54,000 above an engineering estimate. As a result, the city negotiated $16,000 reduction in the project to get it to fit within its budget.

The next lowest bid was from Half Moon Construction of Colbert at $540,000.

The project, being financed through a federal grant, will include paving blocks, new lighting, trash bins, benches, bus shelter, irrigation, street trees and safer street crossings for pedestrians.

Funds also will come from the Spokane Transit Authority and the neighborhood’s Community Development block grant.

The project is near Grant Elementary School and will increase safety for children using the crossings. Work is expected to begin in April.

The first phase of the project in 2003 paid for improvements between Ninth and 11th avenues.
