Idaho linebacker on Lombardi list

University of Idaho senior linebacker David Vobora has been selected to the Lombardi Award watch list, the school announced Tuesday.

Vobora was ranked seventh nationally in total tackles last fall and fourth nationally in solo stops. He led the Vandals with 134 total tackles and 15.5 tackles for loss. He was a first-team all-Western Athletic Conference selection.

The Lombardi Award is given annually to either a defensive lineman or defensive player who lines up within 5 yards of the football.

There are 43 players on the initial watch list.

Jordan gets fined for Durant talk

The NBA fined Charlotte Bobcats part-owner Michael Jordan $15,000 for discussing Texas freshman Kevin Durant during an interview last week.

Team coaches and executives are barred from talking about underclassmen who have yet to declare for the NBA draft. But in an interview with The Charlotte Observer on March 13, Jordan said he was interested in versatile players and added, “The kid who may present that is the kid in Texas. (He) may have that because he has all the right signs.”

The Boston Celtics were fined $30,000 after general manager Danny Ainge sat next to Durant’s mother during the Big 12 tournament.

Tar Heels coach faces chemo

North Carolina football coach Butch Davis is undergoing chemotherapy after a dentist removed a cancerous growth from his mouth.

“I know people are going to be concerned and everything, but it’s going to be OK,” Davis said. “We’re going to get through this and we’re going to have a great season next fall.”

The 55-year-old coach said he wasn’t aware he had a growth when he saw his dentist late last month in Cleveland for a routine cleaning.

After the growth was removed, a biopsy diagnosed it as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Subsequent exams found no evidence that the cancer has spread, but Davis said he is undergoing chemotherapy as a precaution.
