Street project bids sought

Bids will be sought starting on Friday for reconstruction of Washington Street from Buckeye to Boone avenues, probably beginning in early summer and taking about 10 weeks to complete.

The job involves some repaving and some reconstruction of the entire roadbed as part of a 10-year, $117 million bond issue approved by voters in 2004 and a federal transportation grant. The work involves about a mile of pavement and is estimated to cost more than $2 million.

The complete reconstruction will involve the section of Washington from Shannon to Buckeye avenues, including the intersections at Shannon and Buckeye. A grind-and-overlay repaving job is sought for the section from Boone to Shannon, including the intersection at Boone.

Water and sewer mains are being repaired in anticipation of the reconstruction.

During construction, Washington Street from Boone to Shannon avenues will have one lane open in each direction, except during asphalt paving when it will be completely closed. Likewise, the intersections at Boone and Indiana avenues will be reduced to one lane and closed during paving, but for no more than 12 hours.

The intersection at Mission Avenue also will have one lane open to traffic except during paving when the contractor will be given two days and one night to close the intersection for paving.

Washington will be closed to traffic during construction from Shannon to Buckeye, but local-access traffic will be allowed. The intersection at Buckeye will be closed for no more than seven days during paving.

Only one east-west arterial may be closed at any one time under the city’s bid requirements.
