Zags’ Stumetz blanks Huskies
Jeremy Stumetz made his first career start a memorable one.
The freshman tossed a complete-game shutout, helping host Gonzaga throttle Washington 12-0 Wednesday in a non-conference baseball game at Washington Trust Field.
Stumetz’s gem, the first shutout of the season for Gonzaga, included six strikeouts and one walk. He allowed four hits, all singles.
Darin Holcomb led the offensive attack for the Bulldogs (15-11), going 3 for 4, including a two-run home run in the third inning, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Geoff Nichols lasted only 4 1/3 innings and took the loss for the Huskies (11-9), who had won nine consecutive games.
The Bulldogs batted through the lineup in the fifth and eighth, scoring four and five runs, respectively.
Men’s basketball
Whitworth (24-4) finished ninth in the final D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, its highest final ranking at the Division III level.
National champion Amherst (30-2) earned the top spot.
