Collecting: ‘Gone With the Wind’

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have an early edition of “Gone With the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell. Is it valuable? — Ken, Topeka, Kan.

A: The first edition of “Gone With the Wind” was published in New York in 1936 and is marked “Published May, 1936.” The cover is gray cloth, and the original cover featured other Macmillan titles on the back panel. Most first editions I’ve seen are priced in the $5,000 to $10,000 range depending on condition and if it has its cover. If you have a first edition and wish to sell, you might contact a good rare book dealer.

Q: I have a Lionel train from the 1940s, and I am wondering what it might be worth. — Steve, Austin, Texas

A: There are several excellent guides that will keep your search on track. Two of my personal favorites are the Standard Catalogue of Lionel Trains, 1900-1942, and 1945-1969, both by David Doyle (KP Books, $29.99 each). There is a handy smaller guide, Collecting Toy Trains by Richard Friz (House of Collectibles, $14.95).

Q: I have an old churn and would like to find out more about it. — Mystia, Sumrall, Miss.

A: Wendell W. Stream is the owner of Churn Castle Antiques and buys, sells, collects and appraises older butter churns. He might be able to help you. His contact information is 809 Maple Ave., Woodward, Iowa 50276; xisp@netins.net; www.showcase.netins.net/web/churns; and 515-438-4142.

Q: I have a large brass belt buckle that depicts Mickey Mouse and is marked “Hollywood, California, USA, 1937.” What can you tell me about it? — V.B., Campbell River, B.C., Canada

A: All authentic Disney items are marked as such. However, I cannot find your belt buckle in any of my Disney guides and believe it is probably a reproduction.
