College Roundup: Miller, Prince help Cougars sweep BYU

The Spokesman-Review

Jayson Miller tossed a complete game to lead the Washington State Cougars to a 2-1 victory and a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Brigham Young Cougars on Wednesday in Pullman.

In the opener, Jared Prince slammed a double, one of five Washington State hits in the game, in the 12th inning to score Scott Suttmeier as the Cougars defeated Brigham Young 4-3.

In the nightcap, Miller (2-0) allowed just one run and eight hits in his nine-inning stint. He struck out six in becoming the first Cougar to go the distance since the 2004 season.

WSU took the lead in the sixth when catcher Greg Lagreid led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on Suttmeier’s single to left field.

In the first game, Ross Humes (2-1) shut down BYU’s bats in the final four innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts to earn the victory.

Matt Jensen took the loss for BYU.

Suttmeier finished with two of WSU’s five hits.

WSU improved to 15-10 on the season, while BYU fell to 14-12.

“Yakima swept a NWAACC doubleheader from visiting Community Colleges of Spokane.

In the first game, the Yaks scored early and often – pounding out 18 hits, including four from sophomore Devon Bouvier – en route to a 12-5 victory.

AJ Proszek (3-1) suffered the loss for the Sasquatch, going four innings before giving way to Kurtis Kasper in the fifth.

Cole Janini tallied three hits to lead CCS, and Brian Yardley, Cody Brubaker and Chris Bozo all had two hits apiece, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a five-run fourth for Yakima.

In the second game, CC of Spokane (10-10, 0-2) fell victim to a big fourth inning once again, allowing five runs to give Yakima (11-10, 2-0) an 8-5 lead on its way to a 10-8 win.

Men’s track

Washington State’s Rickey Moody stands in third place with 3,860 points in the decathlon, 109 points behind leader Josh Hustedt of Stanford after the first day of the Cal Multi-Meet on the UC-Berkeley campus.
