Golden Bears handle Cougars

California scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-all tie and the Golden Bears topped visiting Washington State 8-4 in a Pac-10 Conference baseball game Friday at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.

Charlie Cutler had two hits and drove in three runs for California, including a two-run single in the decisive fifth.

Tyson Ross (3-4) earned the win for the Golden Bears (16-13, 1-0) after scattering four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Wayne Daman Jr. (2-1) took the loss for the Cougars (15-11, 0-4).

“Jake Rife hit a two-out RBI single in the seventh to break a 4-all tie and give Washington (15-9, 4-0) a 5-4 win over 16th-ranked Arizona State (21-10, 2-2) in a Pac-10 game at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Huskies left-hander Nick Haughian (3-2) held the Sun Devils to four runs on 11 hits over seven innings.

Softball

Kelcey Cavan allowed no hits and no runs while striking out 12 in a complete game as North Idaho blanked visiting Colorado Northwestern (1-34, 0-21) 8-0 in the first game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Shay Craig went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Kristen Burch was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Cardinals.

In the second game, Jessica Farmer hit a three-run double in the fifth as NIC won 5-1.

Mandy Mikelson earned the win for the Cardinals (25-12, 16-6) after allowing one run on six hits in five innings.

“CC Spokane and Treasure Valley (5-18, 1-5) split an NWAACC doubleheader at Ontario, Ore. In the first game, Jamie Petersen and Jennifer Bamburg hit home runs as Treasure Valley won 7-5.

In the second game, Nikki Johnson hit a grand slam in the seventh and CCS cruised to a 22-9 victory.

Amber Keeler earned the win for the Sasquatch (7-7, 3-1).

“Kristie Fox’s two-run home run in the first was all the offense fifth-ranked Arizona needed as the Wildcats topped 12th-ranked Washington (22-8, 0-1) 6-0 in Seattle to open Pac-10 play.

Taryne Mowatt picked up the win for Arizona (25-7, 1-0) after allowing no runs on four hits while striking out nine.

Golf

Gonzaga’s men shot a final-round 298 to finish tied for eighth with Idaho at the Cuesta Title/Cal Poly Intercollegiate at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif. Host Cal Poly won with a three-round 866.

Swimming

Washington State’s Erin McCleave placed seventh in the 400-meter freestyle on the fourth day of competition at the U.S. Spring National Championships in East Meadow, N.Y.

McCleave finished in 4 minutes, 19.37 seconds.

Track and field

Three Washington State women steeplechasers ran NCAA qualifying times at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Stanford, Calif.

Sara Trane ran the second-fastest women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in WSU history, finishing third with a personal-best and NCAA regional qualifying time of 10 minutes, 33.74 seconds.

Cougars teammates Collier Lawrence and Kayle Peterson also reached PRs and NCAA RQ times as they finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Lawrence ran a time of 10:41.14 while Peterson clocked 10:43.83.
