Area students named National Merit Scholars

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has named 2,500 high school seniors as National Merit Scholars from a pool of around 15,000 finalists.

The winners each will receive a $2,500 scholarship based on their accomplishments, skills and potential for success.

Local winners are:

Nathan Damiano of Central Valley High School, who plans to study medicine; Samuel Wagstaff of St. George’s School, who plans to study biomedical engineering; Nathan Robnett-Conover of Lewis and Clark High School, who says he is undecided about his future studies; and David Rogers of Shadle Park High School, who plans to study cognitive science.

Band and Strings Spectacular

About 2,200 fifth- and sixth-grade students will converge on the Spokane Arena on Tuesday for Spokane Public Schools’ Band and Strings Spectacular.

The annual event was nearly canceled this year because of the school district’s budget woes, but it was resurrected with the help of KHQ-TV, AmericanWest Bank and Windermere Realty. They raised the $12,000 needed to stage the event.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Small donations will be accepted.

Fish for thought

Kristy Masteller’s classroom at the Libby Center has two new aquariums with tropical fish, thanks to a few of her Odyssey students.

Alyssa Akers and Lily Evans each won a runner-up prize of $75 aquarium set-up kits from the Tetra Corp. Alex Ruff, who won one of 10 grand prizes from Tetra, received a $1,000 savings bond and five aquarium kits for the Libby Center.

The students wrote essays describing how aquariums have inspired their learning.

Skills Center students awarded

Three students at the Skills Center recently received Washington Awards for Vocational Excellence scholarships.

Ashlee Milenewicz, in the auto tech program; Brendan Ogorek, in the collision repair program; and Joelle Sturgeon, in the nursing assistant program, each received a scholarship to pay undergraduate expenses for two years at a Washington school or a licensed private vocational school.

All three students maintained a grade-point average of at least 3.0 and completed a minimum of 360 hours in an approved vocational program.
