Gonzaga sweeps Loyola
Gonzaga University used a six-run eighth inning to defeat Loyola Marymount 6-4 in West Coast Conference baseball action Sunday at Washington Trust Field.
The victory was the 30th of the season for the Bulldogs, marking the first time since 1990 that GU has accomplished the feat.
Gonzaga (30-21 overall, 13-5 WCC) swept the weekend series from the Lions and moved a game and a half ahead of idle Pepperdine for second place in the conference standings.
Ryan Wiegand and Mike Terry drove in two runs apiece for Gonzaga and Evan Wells, Darin Holcomb, Weigand, Dustin Colclough, Aaron McGuinness and Shawn Wayt had two hits apiece.
Angelo Songco had three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Loyola Marymount (20-30, 7-11) offense.
Gonzaga faces Pepperdine in a pivotal three-game conference series beginning Friday at Malibu, Calif.
•Paul Gran had a career-high five hits and Washington State plated two runs in the eighth inning to earn an 8-6 Pacific-10 Conference victory over Stanford at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Ross Humes closed out the ninth with a strikeout for his 10th save, tying the single-season school record held by Reed Rainey.
Gran finished 5 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for WSU (22-21, 5-12).
Adam Sorgi led Stanford (19-25, 4-13) with two RBIs.
The series concludes today at noon.
•Designated hitter Jason Ogata stroked a bases-loaded, three-run double during a six-run fourth inning and Oregon State avoided a series sweep by beating Washington 8-2 at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
Ogata also had an RBI single in the sixth inning. Ogata and Darwin Barney each collected three hits for the Beavers (35-11, 7-8 Pac-10).
Matt Hague extended his hitting streak to 16 games with an RBI double to left field in the sixth inning for the Huskies (23-21, 8-7).
The Huskies host Portland in Tuesday and Wednesday non-conference games.
Softball
Danielle Lawrie reached double figures in strikeouts for the 22nd time this season and the Washington Huskies (34-14, 11-7) earned a 5-1 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the California Golden Bears (32-28, 6-12).
