NCAA rules against Temple

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University was placed on two years’ probation by the NCAA on Thursday for violations that involved fired men’s tennis coach Bill Hoehne.

Hoehne went to great lengths to hide the fact that he was using an ineligible athlete, telling a student to compete under someone else’s name, the NCAA said.

The coach, who was fired on April 12, 2005, hid the scheme by mumbling the name of the student-athlete during prematch introductions and by asking opponents to skip formal introductions altogether, the NCAA said.

The school and Hoehne were cited for violations including fraud and erroneous student-athlete eligibility certifications.
