Ready, aim, fire!

» If you've always wanted to see a cannon fired, grab your car keys and your earplugs. Members of the First Michigan Artillery Group will fire a replica Civil War cannon every half hour today from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the On Sacred Grounds coffee shop at 12212 E. Palouse Highway.

» The group is part of the Civil War re-enactments in the area. During the demonstration they will be looking for volunteers to take part in the Battle of Spokane Falls during the Memorial Day weekend. So head to Valleyford if dressing up in an old uniform and fighting a battle sounds like fun. Or if you just want to hear a really loud bang.

» Tip your glass in honor of the annual Spring Barrel Tasting at 11 local wineries, several of which are in the Spokane Valley area. Each location will have wines available for sampling and refreshments. Participating wineries include Arbor Crest, Barrister, Caterina, Grande Ronde, Knipprath, Latah Creek, Lone Canary, Mountain Dome, Robert Karl, Townshend and Vintage Hill.

» Maps will be available at each location. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday. The event can be a great way to celebrate Mother's Day, but please bring a designated driver along. All that wine adds up.

Family fun

Otis Orchards will be teeming with activity today during the small community's annual Fun Day hosted by SCOPE East and Otis Orchards Elementary. There will be a parade, bicycle rodeo, raffle, games, food and antique cars. The event begins with the parade at noon. Activities will be held at Otis Orchards Elementary, 22000 E. Wellesley Ave.
