Canada wins another world title – its 24th

Canada used a different formula to achieve familiar results at the world hockey championships.

Relying on youngsters and journeymen instead of stars, the Canadians defeated Finland 4-2 Sunday at Moscow to win their third world title in five years and their 24th overall.

Earlier, Russia won the bronze medal by beating Sweden 3-1.

Canada has won 24 senior and 13 junior world titles, as well as seven Olympic golds and five Canada Cup and World Cup titles. Its previous world title was in 2004.

Nadal extends clay run

Rafael Nadal defeated Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-2, 6-2 in the title match of the Rome Masters.

But before reaching the final, the No. 2-ranked Spaniard had to overcome a dizzy spell and an apparent stomach problem that forced him to go to the hospital. He also spent nearly four hours on the court against Nikolay Davydenko in the semifinals.

Rome is a key clay-court warmup for the French Open, which begins May 27.

•Ana Ivanovic defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to win the Berlin Open, giving her a top-10 ranking for the first time.

She will move from No. 16 to as high as No. 8 in the new world rankings.

•Akiko Morigami of Japan won her first WTA title, defeating an ailing Marion Bartoli of France 6-1, 6-3 in the Prague Open final.

BASKETBALL

Bird to stay with Storm

Four-time All-Star guard Sue Bird has signed on for another season with the Seattle Storm.

The team did not disclose terms of the deal when it announced the contract on Saturday.

Bird, the first player the Storm picked in the 2002 WNBA draft, said she did not agree to a longer term because of uncertaintly about whether the team will stay in Seattle.

100 titles for UCLA

At Los Alamitos, Calif., UCLA won its third straight women’s water polo championship to become the first school to reach 100 NCAA titles, beating top-seeded Stanford 5-4 behind Courtney Mathewson’s three goals.

•Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson was released from jail after spending two months behind bars for violating parole in a 2005 weapons case.

He was released on good behavior after serving half his sentence.

The 25-year-old player is to have a hearing with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday in New York and may face a multigame suspension.

•Robbie McEwen won the second stage of the Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish in Bosa, Sardinia, and Danilo Di Luca took the overall lead from teammate Enrico Gasparotto.

•Winthrop basketball player DeAndre Adams was in a coma in an Atlanta hospital after a car accident, coach Randy Peele said.

The 20-year-old backup guard was returning to his Austell, Ga., home when his car left the road, flipped and hit a tree about 4 a.m. Saturday.
