Deer Park, Nine Mile school bonds losing
Two school district bonds were just a few votes shy of the supermajority needed to pass as special election results came in Tuesday evening.
Deer Park School District and Nine Mile Falls School District both were running bonds to make school improvements. Similar bonds had failed before in each district because, though a majority of voters approved the measures, state law mandates 60 percent to pass. Deer Park ran a $24 million bond issue that saw a 1,755-to-1,205 margin, with the yes votes garnering 59.29 percent.
Nine Mile Falls had an even closer percentage for its $12.3 million bond at 1,507 to 1,007, with yes votes a 59.94 percent majority.
Recently mailed ballots still need to be counted. It was a different story Tuesday evening for three fire propositions that also needed a supermajority to win.
Spokane County Fire District No. 8 wanted to restore its EMS levy, which passed 2,882 to 1,487 with 66 percent voting yes. Spokane County Fire District No. 10 passed its levy 980 to 522 with 65 percent voting yes.
The town of Rockford also approved its fire proposition, 67-38, with 64 percent voting yes.
