In brief: Furniture raffle to help Shasta

The Spokesman-Review

Two businesses are teaming up to help the communitywide effort to build and furnish a home for Shasta Groene.

World of Art and Pinnacle Practice Management Associates plan to raffle off a sofa and chair on June 1. Pinnacle PMA has agreed to match the funds raised through the raffle.

Tickets can be purchased for $10 at World of Art, 400 W. Clayton Ave., in Coeur d’Alene, or at Pinnacle PMA, 806 Clearwater Loop in Post Falls.

Tickets will be available through May 31.

The home is scheduled to be completed in time for the 10-year-old crime victim and her father, Steve, to move in by July 4.

NIC newspaper wins award

The North Idaho College student newspaper is the best nondaily college paper in the nation, according to the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Sentinel earned first place in the 2006 best of show category for college papers published less than four times a week. The Sentinel publishes about once a month.

The paper competed with newspapers from colleges all over the country. NIC was the only two-year college with a publication honored.

“All those universities, then little old us,” said journalism instructor Nils Rosdahl, the Sentinel’s adviser. “It’s pretty cool.”

It’s the fourth national first place award the paper has earned from the organization. The paper was named best all-around for its category in 2002 and has won top honors in the student newspaper Web site category twice.

Some Sentinel staffers will travel to Washington, D.C., in October to accept the award at the national SPJ convention.
