Religion notebook: Pilgrim Lutheran celebrates 80th
Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd., will celebrate 80 years of worship Sunday.
The morning will begin with an education hour at 9 a.m. and there will be a service at 10:30 a.m.
A reception will follow the service. The church is inviting all former members of the church to attend.

New church
The New Beginnings Christian Church, a new church in the area, will meet for services Sunday at the Quality Inn, 7919 N. Division.

Evensong
The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer Evensong Sunday at 4 p.m.
Evensong is a choral version of evening prayer. The Very Rev. Bill Ellis and the Rev. David Walker will offer a meditation and traditional canticles will be song.

Buddhist celebration
Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry, will celebrate the birthday of Shinran Shonin (1173-1262), the founder of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
The celebration, or Gotan-e, will include the Rev. Don Castro from the Seattle Betsuin Temple.

Apple Blossom Tea
The Women’s Fellowship of Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington, will present its annual Apple Blossom Tea and Heritage Sunday at noon.
The event will feature a presentation by church moderator Alan Mackay about the stained glass windows of the church.
The tradition of this tea goes back to the church’s founding pastor’s wife, Lucy Cowley.
Around the time when the church was started in 1879, Cowley invited women’s groups to her home in early May to enjoy the apple blossoms in the couple’s orchard.
A freewill offering will be accepted to benefit the window preservation campaign.

Rummage sales
“St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2 W. Third Ave., will hold a rummage sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Proceeds from the sale will help pay to pack the church’s pipe organ before it is shipped to the church’s new location on Meadow Lane Road.

Spokane Civic Theatre Musical Revue benefit
The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard, will present a musical revue Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to benefit the Spokane Civic Theatre.
The theatre’s production of “Assassins,” by Stephen Sondheim will travel to Charlotte, N.C., to participate in the American Association of Community Theatre’s AACT/Fest 2007, from June 19 to 23.
The tickets for the performance are $20 and are on sale now.
