Boy hit while biking in traffic

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A child was seriously injured Thursday evening while riding his bike into traffic, fire officials said.

The 13-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was riding his bike near Elgin Street and Wabash Avenue about 8:30 p.m. and entered traffic.

A vehicle hit him, causing a serious head injury, said Spokane fire Lt. Chuck Mauro, who added that the child was not wearing a helmet.

The boy was having difficulty speaking and answering firefighters’ questions, Mauro said.

“If this kid had a helmet on, he might be banged up, but he would have fared a lot better,” Mauro said.

It was unknown whether citations were issued at the incident, as phone calls to Spokane police seeking information were not returned Thursday evening.
