NIC staves off elimination
Kelcey Cavan allowed three runs on two hits while striking out nine as the North Idaho softball team staved off elimination from the NJCAA Division I national tournament by beating Crowder College 4-3 Thursday in Plant City, Fla.
NIC’s Alysha Krier hit a two-run single in the third inning to put NIC up 4-2. Angie Boardman and Shay Craig each had two hits to lead the Cardinals.
North Idaho fell to McLennan 2-1 earlier in the day.
The Cardinals were limited to one run on three hits.
North Idaho (42-26) advances to play Texarkana College (48-17) today at noon in Plant City.
Texarkana College beat West Texas 5-1 before falling to Eastern Arizona 1-0.
Tennis
Patrick Dreves announced his resignation from his position as head men’s and women’s coach at Eastern Washington University. He made the move to spend more time with his family, act as the director of junior development at the Spokane Athletic Club and serve as assistant men’s and women’s coach at Whitworth College, his alma mater.
This year, Dreves was named the Big Sky Conference Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year to become the first tennis coach at Eastern, men’s or women’s, to win the award. Both of his 2007 teams earned winning regular-season conference marks for the first time and the men’s squad advanced to the Big Sky’s championship match, snapping an all-time 0-40 postseason record since joining the Division I ranks in 1984.
“Tennis players from Washington and Oregon will call the greater Spokane area home from today through Sunday as they compete in the USTA Pacific Northwest Eastern Washington Regional Playoffs supported by the Spokane Regional Sports Commission.
The facility responsibilities for the event will be shared by the Spokane Athletic Club, Spokane Racquet Club and North Park Racquet Club. The event will kick off on today starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m. Saturday’s schedule will be identical, but the competition Sunday will start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 5 p.m.
Men’s golf
The Whitworth men moved into 18th place after the third round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind.
Junior Andrew Parrott led the Pirates after shooting a 2-over-par 74 for a three-round total of 227. He is tied for 11th.
Whitworth posted a team score of 315 and moved up from a three-way tie for 19th.
St. John’s (Minn.) is in the lead.

The Huskies’ Alex Prugh (Ferris High) shot a 72 and is tied for 74th.
College baseball
Gonzaga University’s allotment of tickets for the West Coast Conference Championship Series May 25-27 versus host University of San Diego have sold out.

The best-of-3 series will be played at Cunningham Stadium on the USD campus.
