In brief: City rezones area near Huckleberry’s

The Spokesman-Review

Apartments no longer will be approved in a four-block area near Huckleberry’s on the South Hill.

The Spokane City Council on Monday rezoned most of the land from Seventh to 10th avenues between Jefferson and Madison streets.

The change also encompassed half of two blocks from Madison to Monroe between Seventh and Ninth avenues.

The old designation for the neighborhood was “residential multifamily,” which allowed 15 to 30 residential units an acre. It was switched to single-family residential, which allows four to 10 units an acre.

Most of the neighborhood is composed of historic single-family homes, resident Glenn Tanner told the council.

The old zoning encouraged converting those houses to apartments.

Council members said they agreed with the change to protect the historic nature of the neighborhood.

Properties that already have apartments are grandfathered.
