‘Once on This Island’ scheduled at LC

The Lewis and Clark High School Musical Theatre will present “Once on This Island,” May 31 through June 2 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The production will explore the themes of love, loss and redemption through Caribbean culture, art, religion and social structure.

Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door.

Cast members include: Kyle Carter, Lillian Dubiel, Elliot Eaton, Ceilan Hunter-Green, Blake Kennedy, Alyssa Lotze-Knudsen, Madison Martin, David Osei, Chloe Rhodes, Gregory Safranek, Alexia Scaringella, Noel Wamsley, Maddy Weatherhead, Zach Wymore, and Mia Yoshida.

The band members for the production are: Becky Roubos, Kailan Tyler-Babkirk, Zion Carrol, Mark Lindsey, Mike Nave, John Loft, Mike Gebhart, Jarred Katz, Colin Moravec, Jeremy Larson, Emmet Winkle Von Stackelberg, and Kathleen Blair.

Outstanding volunteers

Everett Best, Gorden Chorley, and Russ Chaffee were named outstanding volunteers in a surprise announcement Tuesday.

The three volunteer four to six hours each week to teach woodworking skills.

Best has been a volunteer in the woodworking shop at Ferris High School for nine years and Chorley and Chaffee have been volunteering for five years each.

Washington Award for Vocational Excellence

Five Spokane Public Schools students received Washington Award for Vocational Excellence scholarships last week.

The WAVE scholarships provide students with undergraduate tuition for four semesters or six quarters at colleges and universities in Washington State.

This year’s scholars listed by school, and followed by area of study, include:

North Central High School, Alicia Kahler, business; Lewis and Clark High School, Conrad Sykes, computer programming; and Spokane Skills Center, Ashlee Milenewicz, automotive; Branden Ogorek, collision repair; and Joelle Sturgeon, nursing.

The WAVE program was created in 1984 by the Washington Legislature, to recognize and reward students who excel in career technical education.

The award is administered by the Washington State Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board.

Three winners are selected from each legislative district across the state.

Student receives $40,000 scholarship

Jonathan Woodruff of Upper Columbia Academy has received a $40,000 scholarship to attend Walla Walla College and study engineering.

Woodruff received this scholarship from the McKelvey Foundation which grants four-year scholarships to students how have owned and operated their own businesses in high school. Woodruff owns and operates MountainSkyCam, an aerial photography business which uses a radio-controlled helicopter to take pictures of homes and properties for real estate brokers, developers and private home owners.

Anonymous donor helps family

The staff at Windsor Elementary School in Cheney has received a donation from an anonymous source to help a student and a former student in need of their grandmother who lives in Germany.

Erika Mueller received an airplane ticket from the donor to come to Cheney and care for her daughter, Ilonka Krauss who is seriously ill.

Krauss has a daughter, Courtney, who attends Windsor and a daughter, Selina, who now attends Cheney Middle School.

The school is now busy raising money to repay the donor.
