WNBA : Banner night for Storm in win over Mercury
Lauren Jackson scored 31 points, and Betty Lennox had 22 to help the Seattle Storm set a franchise record for points in a game in their 100-87 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night in Seattle.
Janell Burse added 13 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, one short of Seattle’s team record held by Jackson, and Sue Bird also had 13 points for the Storm. Cappie Pondexter led the Mercury with 31 points, and Diana Taurasi had 14.
Jackson, injury-free after battling foot and shin problems, made three 3-pointers and was 12 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Jackson made two free throws with 4:24 left to break the team record of 97 points, set in a win over Phoenix last season. She made two more free throws a minute later to give her 31 points, four shy of her team record set last May against Phoenix.
Silver Stars 74, Sun 71: At San Antonio, Becky Hammon scored 17 points and the Silver Stars held off Connecticut after blowing most of a 25-point lead.
Hammon, acquired from New York in a draft-day trade, made two free throws with 5.8 seconds left and finished 9 of 10 from the line.
Katie Douglas led the Sun with 21 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Asjha Jones added 20 points, and Ericka de Souza had 14.
Jackson booted off Sky
The Chicago Sky terminated the contract of guard Deanna Jackson, one month after she hit an opposing player in a parking lot after Israel’s national league title game.
Jackson, who spent the off-season playing for Israeli team Anda Ramat Hasharon, was placed on indefinite suspension by the Sky following her arrest on April 24 for assaulting Elitzur Ramle guard Ina Gourevitch in a Jerusalem parking lot after an 81-68 loss in the championship game.
