Mead, LC girls in semis

VANCOUVER – Mead’s doubles duo of Katrina Schwab and Britta Stime advanced to today’s semifinals of the State 4A tennis championships, making it a step further than their first trip to state a year ago.

They’re joined in the girls semis by Lewis and Clark’s Erica Ehlo and Lyndi Seidensticker, who also won twice on day one.

The Mead team takes on Lake Washington’s Shannon and Jillian Adams in one of this morning’s semifinals, while the LC pair takes on Stanwood’s Megan Amundson and Dani Fullwiler.

“It feels pretty good,” Schwab said after a straight-set quarterfinal win over Central Kitsap’s Corinne Wurden and Aimee Rozier.

The Mead girls, who finished sixth last year, struggled early in their first match with Monroe’s Kenna Hopkins and Lacey Thompson, winning 7-5, 6-0.

“We kind of had a slow start,” Schwab said.

“But we can always pull through,” Stime added, finishing her partner’s thought.

“This is a bonus,” Seidensticker said of advancing to the semis. “Our goal was just to make regionals, and then make state.”

The Tigers beat the Ferris team of Christina Berg and Kelsey McLauchlin 6-1, 6-2 in their quarterfinal. Berg and McLauchlin were eliminated their next match in consolation play.

On the boys’ side, Ferris’ Whitman Hough was on the verge of a semifinal appearance, taking last year’s 4A runner-up, Eric DeBusschere of Olympia, to three sets in the quarterfinals, before losing 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

Hough was eliminated in consolation play by Bellarmine Prep’s Paul Namkoong, 7-6, 6-2.

Ferris’ John Cadagan and Kevin Satre will meet LC’s Chris Martin and Nick Johnson in a consolation semifinal.

The Ferris team won its opening match, but lost to defending state champs Brian McPhee and Simon Meske of Bellarmine Prep, 6-1, 6-3.

LC’s Chris Martin and Nick Johnson lost their opener but stayed alive with two victories afterward.

LC’s Elise Otto was the victim of the biggest upset in the girls singles bracket.

After a third-place finish in 2006, Otto was beaten in the quarterfinals by Evergreen freshman Christina Le. Otto led 5-2 in the first set, then lost 11 straight games to fall 5-7, 6-0.

She recovered to win a three-set consolation match.

Gonzaga Prep freshman Anna Lambert is alive in the consolation round as is Ferris’ Katie Griffith.

2A: Clarkston’s Richard Muszynski advanced to the semifinals of boys singles after beating Sehome’s Adam Rager in the second round at the Yakima Tennis Center. Also advancing to the semifinals was Medical Lake’s Max Nelson, who beat Quincy’s Cameron Rasmussen in the second round.

In doubles, Clarkston’s Ed Rooney and Kyle Servatius and Medical Lake’s Dallon Bogart and Tyler Lemasters won both matches and will meet in the semifinals.

For the girls, Clarkston’s Elise Rooney advanced to the semifinals after beating Ridgefield’s Kayla Fix.
