Romero still atop leaderboard

Eduardo Romero took the sting out of The Ocean Course for a second straight day, grabbing a two-stroke lead at the Senior PGA Championship.

Romero, the first-round leader after a 4-under-par 68 in strong wind, shot a 70 in calmer conditions Friday to move to 6 under in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki (71) remained second at 4 under. Nick Price, who won PGA Championships in 1992 and 1994, was next at 3 under after a 70.

The howling Atlantic wind Romero savors wasn’t nearly as bothersome, with gusts falling off to 10 to 15 mph.

LPGA

Undeterred by a weather delay that created gusting wind midway through her round, Beth Bader shot a 6-under 66 on to take a one-shot lead over Young Kim (64) after two rounds at the LPGA Corning Classic in Corning, N.Y.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., missed the cut after a 71 put her at 145.

“Kelly Jo Dowd, a cancer-stricken mother whose dream of seeing her teen daughter Dakoda play in an LPGA event was realized last spring, died at 42.

She spent years battling breast cancer, which her family said spread to her bones and liver, and then to her brain in the final months of her life. She died Thursday night at her home in Palm Harbor, Fla., with relatives at her side.

PGA

Tim Clark shot an 11 under had a one-stroke lead over Arron Oberholser (66) in the rain-soaked Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

Fifty-seven players – exactly half the 114-player Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial field – had to finish their first rounds in the morning and go back out for 18 more holes. Kirk Triplett, formerly of Pullman, shot 73 and is at 142.

NCAA women

Duke won its third straight title, and Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis rallied to take the individual championship.

University of Idaho junior Kelly Nakashima shot a final-round 78 and finished tied for 87th at The Legends course at LPGA International at Daytona Beach, Fla. Nakashima, the first Vandals woman to qualify for the national tournament, shot a 314 for the tournament.
