Collecting: Hand fans

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have a Victorian-era fan that I would like to find out more about. Do you have any suggestions? — Connie, Waco, Texas

A: Dorothy Fowler is an officer of the Fan Association of North America, and she has agreed to help you. Her contact information is P.O. Box 24118, St. Simons Island, GA 31522; and www.fanassociation.org. This not-for-profit organization promotes fans as art objects and historic artifacts, supports research and guides both members and nonmembers in fan collecting.

Q: I have either a first or second edition of “Boots and Saddles,” the 1885 book by Elizabeth Custer. I would assume that it is valuable. Can you help me? — Susan, Billings, Mont.

A: I found a listing for the book in the Fourth Edition of the Official Price Guide to Collecting Books by Marie Tedford and Pat Goudey (House of Collectibles, $18). According to this source, it is worth in the $45 to $85 range depending on edition, condition and if it has its map and portrait intact. The book has been reprinted several times, and I found dozens of used copies at www.abe.com.

Q: I have a Cabbage Patch doll I would like to sell. I thought about listing on eBay but would like your opinion first. — Pueblo, Colo.

A: Ann Wilhite is a collector and might be able to help you find a buyer. Her address and telephone number are 610 West 17th St., Fremont, NE 68025; and 402-721-0954. Selling on eBay is a good idea, too, since it would be offered before a national audience of collectors.
