Locally: Third Poffenroth joins I.E. softball shrine
It’s a trifecta for the Poffenroth family in the Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame.
Barry Poffenroth, better known in recent years as the Central Valley High School baseball coach, is among nine inductees in the I.E. Softball Hall of Fame Class of 2007.
Poffenroth, who played men’s modified pitch, joins his father, Bob, a former fast-pitch star, and twin brother Larry, who also played modified, in the softball shrine.
Also to be inducted during ceremonies July 14 at the Sons of Norway Hall, 6710 N. Country Homes Blvd., are players Ron Huffman (fast pitch and modified), Gary Johnson (modified), Tim Peterson (modified), Don Preston (fast pitch), Jim Queen (fast pitch) and Scott Waggoner (fast pitch and modified), manager Harry Amend (modified) and sponsor Pat Graham (American Coin and Vault).
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth 14 and younger. A no-host social at 4 p.m. will precede dinner at 6. Reservation deadline is July 7.

“Five members of the Spokane Softball Umpires Association worked state high school tournaments this weekend.
Rob Hough and Ron Snyder were at the 4A/3A in Tacoma, Don Brock at the 2A in Wenatchee, Bob Baugh at the 1A in Moses Lake and Jerome Duffney at the 1B/2B in Yakima.
In addition, Kathleen Burns of SSUA was the umpire-in-chief of the 1A tournament in Moses Lake.
Basketball
Richelle Daily of Medical Lake, the most valuable player in the Great Northern League last winter, and Cami Bullock of Liberty, a first-team All-Bi-County League selection, are among three players who have signed letters of intent with Community Colleges of Spokane.
CCS coach Bruce Johnson also announced that Kyl Quale of Fairbanks, Alaska, will join the Sasquatch in the fall. The 6-foot-1 center, who averaged 12.7 points and 10.3 rebounds, was honorable mention all-state and an all-region selection.
Daily, a 5-11 forward, averaged 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinals. Bullock is also a 5-11 forward.
“Shane Miller of Moscow, Idaho, The Spokesman-Review’s selection as most valuable player in the Inland Empire League, has signed to play at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore., coach Drake Wallick announced.
Miller, a 6-4 shooting guard who led the IEL in scoring with a 19.1 average, led the Bears to a second straight third-place finish at the State 4A tournament and was a second-team All-State selection. Miller also averaged seven rebounds a game and shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range.
Bowling
The Spokane area is well-represented among the leaders after six weeks of the U.S. Bowling Congress Washington State Open tournament that winds up this weekend in Spokane.

College scene
Ivanti “Ivy” Bush, the former three-time All-Greater Spokane League volleyball player from Lewis and Clark, capped a solid first year at Morgan State by being named the Female Athlete of the Year at the Baltimore school.
During her freshman season with the Lady Bears, Bush was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, was a second-team all-league choice and was first-team All-MEAC tournament. She had 14 double-doubles including highs of 31 kills and 25 digs.
“Lindsay Mann-King of Colville, a senior in the nationally No. 1-ranked Western Washington varsity 8, has been named an All-American by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association for a third straight year.
Mann-King, juniors Amelia Whitcomb of Ferris, Samantha Marikis of Republic and Lila Scaife, a transfer from Big Bend, provide half the power in the Vikings’ shell that will go for a third straight NCAA Division II national championship today in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
WWU cruised to victory in its qualifying heats Friday to gain a spot in today’s grand finals. The school’s varsity four also is in today’s finals.

Junior Sarah Waterfield was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference rowing team and the CRCA All-West Region first team, both for a second straight year.
Carey Homan of Deer Park was named to the ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA District VIII first all-academic team for the women’s at-large university division. She completed her master’s in accounting with a 3.87 grade point average.
Additionally, Homan and teammates Becca Gibson, Tiana Rodriguez and Catherine Watt were named CRCA National Scholar-athletes. Rodriguez, a junior with a 3.57 GPA in marketing, earned the award for a second straight year. Gibson, a senior, has a 3.78 GPA in communication. Watt, also a senior, has a 3.52 GPA in zoology.
