Crash kills Newport 18-year-old

An 18-year-old Newport, Wash., man died in a one-vehicle rollover on U.S. Highway 2 early Sunday.

Nicholas R. Moreno was driving north on U.S. 2 shortly after 5:30 a.m. when his 1991 Mazda Navajo left the road six miles south of Newport and hit a raised driveway at the end of a ditch, the Washington State Patrol said. The SUV was upside down when troopers arrived.

Moreno, who was traveling alone, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the WSP, he was wearing a seat belt. Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor.

There were no signs the vehicle braked before leaving the road. The vehicle traveled down the ditch before striking the driveway.
