Days of fun and games
POST FALLS – Tilt-a-whirl rides. Hot and crispy elephant ears. Live music. A volleyball tournament. And a lot of good old-fashioned fun.
The city of Post Falls is throwing a three-day this weekend – and you’re invited.
Post Falls Days, the biggest citywide event of the year, will kick off Friday and run through Sunday with a carnival, parade, food and craft vendors, volleyball and fishing tournaments, a dance, live music performed by regional bands, and activities for the whole family.
“It’s a celebration of the community,” said Dave Fair, director of the Post Falls Parks and Recreation Department, which sponsors the event.
“Rain or shine, it’s a good event.”
An estimated 20,000 people are expected to turn out over the weekend at Q’emiln Riverside Park, he said.
The event is held the first weekend in June every year, welcoming summer and timed to mark city founder Frederick Post’s purchase of land along the Spokane River in 1871, Fair said.
Parking and admission are free. Food, crafts and a beer garden will be available.
The carnival will feature rides and games for all ages, with individual tickets and wristband passes available for purchase.
Live music on two stages will play throughout the weekend, featuring regional bands with a variety of music, including country western, rock ‘n’ roll and blues.
At 11 a.m. Saturday, the Home Sweet Home parade will kick off with floats, classic cars, marching bands, animals and clowns. The approximately milelong parade route follows Seltice Way between Frederick and Idaho streets.
Children ages 3 to 7 can test their peddling prowess at 2 p.m. Saturday during the free McDonald’s Big Wheel Race at the Q’emiln Park Grand Pavilion.
Registration is available on-site from noon to 1:30 p.m. on race day, and Big Wheels will be provided for the race.
A free Big Wheel will be given away afterward.
Kids ages 5 to 14 can cast for prizes during a fishing derby Sunday at Falls Park. Adults can register their kids from 9 to 10 a.m. for the free competition, to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A barbecue will be provided.
The Saturday night dance will benefit a good cause, Fair said. Donations will go to a local nonprofit group, Specialized Needs Recreation, which sponsors activities for children and adults with disabilities.
Funds will provide scholarships for children, youths and young adults ages 4 to 21 to attend the summer day camp, Camp All Stars.
The free dance, featuring the local classic rock group The Rhythm Dogs, will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Q’emiln Park Grand Pavilion.
Donations will be accepted at the door.
