CC basketball teams
Head coach: Mike Burns, first season
Last year: 13-16 overall, 6-8 NWAACC, didn’t qualify for NWAACC tournament
Players to watch: Eric Beal, soph., W, 5-11; Kevin Cameron, fr., W, 6-1; Bo Gregg, soph., W, 6-5; Jordan Gregg, soph., W, 6-6.
Season outlook: The Sasquatch return nine players from last year’s team and expect to take back what was theirs in 2005 and 2006 – the Eastern Region title. With their height and depth, the experienced Sasquatch have every reason to expect they will do so.
Head coach: Jared Phay, fourth season
Last year: 16-15 overall, 8-12 SWAC, lost in Region 18 semifinals
Players to watch: Kerry Williams, soph., PG, 6-1; Steve Wesley, soph., W, 6-6; Humberto Perez, soph., G, 6-2; Miilah Kombat, fr., P, 6-7.
Season outlook: With an extremely competitive Scenic West Athletic Conference, the young Cardinals’ goal is to challenge for the title. Two teams stand in their way: Southern Idaho, ranked second in the nation in preseason polls, and Salt Lake, ranked 15th. The Cardinals have the depth on offense and some key newcomers that should make up for their inexperience.
Head coach: Bruce Johnson, 20th season
Last year: 18-9, 8-6 NWAACC, didn’t qualify for NWAACC tournament
Players to watch: Ren Mallory, soph., PG, 5-2; Liz Beardslee, soph., G/F, 5-11; Ashlee Michelson, soph., F, 5-7; Richelle Daily, Fr., P, 6-0.
Season outlook: The Sasquatch finished in the middle of the East Region pack last year and are hoping that a year older means a year wiser. A good nucleus of sophomores will lead the way with a talented group of freshmen expected to contribute. With a balance of depth, size and speed, the Sasquatch should be poised for a competitive run in the region and a return trip to the NWAACC tournament after missing out last season.
Head coach: Chris Carlson, fourth season
Last year: 20-12, 11-9 SWAC, lost in Region 18 semifinals
Players to watch: Cassie Pilkinton, soph., G, 5-10; Danika Lawson, soph., W, 5-9; Ula Tauala, fr., G, 5-6.
Season outlook: Some early injuries will affect the team, which lost All-SWAC guard Jessica Thielen for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The Cardinals are young, with 11 new players, but Carlson expects they will be in the thick of the title hunt. The Cardinals are well balanced and deep with a lot of speed. Salt Lake and Southern Idaho are once again the teams to beat. With a core of solid freshmen, the Cardinals are looking to challenge.
