Baseball notebook: Guillen gone?
The Seattle Mariners on Friday declined their contract options for 2008 on right fielder Jose Guillen and oft-injured reliever Chris Reitsma.
Guillen could still be back. He wants a multiyear contract and not the one-year, $9 million deal he would get if he exercises his part of the mutual option with Seattle for next season.
If Guillen decides not to exercise his part of the option, he won’t get a $500,000 buyout. He must decide within five days.
Boras asked for moon
The New York Yankees were told by agent Scott Boras that they could not meet with Alex Rodriguez unless they presented an extension offer that guaranteed the star $350 million “as a floor.”
Boras’ remarks, first reported by ESPN.com, were made Oct. 25 during a conversation between the agent and general manager Brian Cashman, a baseball official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because those details were not made public.
“Yankees outfielder Bobby Abreu’s $16 million option for next season was exercised.
