In brief: NIC to display artist’s work

Artist Henry Stinson will display his work in an exhibit titled “On the Edge of a Dream” Monday through Dec. 7 in the North Idaho College Boswell Hall Corner Gallery.

Stinson holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Washington State University and completed a Russian impressionist oil painting apprenticeship with Ron Lukas in the 1990s.

He currently teaches at the Scottsdale Artist’s School in Arizona.

Stinson has exhibited his work in various group exhibitions as well as solo exhibits in Arizona, Washington, California, New Mexico and Idaho. He won the Best of Show Award in the Sky Harbor International Exhibit in Phoenix, in 2001.

Stinson’s paintings deal with the physical world as an illusion. He said he believes life is mostly intangible, including being human.

“The opening reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the gallery. A gallery walk with the artist will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday followed by a slide lecture presentation at 1 p.m. in Boswell Hall Room 102.

Boswell Hall Corner Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. The gallery will be closed Nov. 21 through 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

NIC Kellogg offers Internet Explorer class

There’s still room to enroll in an Internet Explorer 7.0 class at the North Idaho College Silver Valley Center in Kellogg.

The class will be offered in two sessions from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The course teaches participants how to navigate the Internet in Internet Explorer as well as other tasks, such as doing research, saving to a favorites list and viewing history.

Buddhist scholar gives presentation

Alex Berzin, a Tibetan Buddhist scholar, will speak on “Balanced Sensitivity: Tools for a Happier Life” during a presentation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Molstead Library’s Todd Hall, on North Idaho College’s main campus.

Berzin will present on his book “Balanced Sensitivity,” which promotes emotional balance and maintaining healthy relationships by using methods to help people of all spiritual persuasions develop a balanced response to life’s situations.

The presentation is sponsored by the NIC Diversity Events Committee and Coeur d’Alene Dharma. The event is free and open to the public.

NIC Career Center hosts open house

North Idaho College’s Career Services has the resources to help individuals discover the perfect career and the education and training necessary to attain it. Career Services will show NIC students and community members how to utilize those resources during Career Development Week Nov. 12 through 16 at NIC.

The NIC Career Center will host a weeklong open house offering free on-the-spot career assessments, the opportunity to try the new Idaho Career Information System, free copies of Job Choices magazine and free refreshments.

The Career Center is on the upper level of Edminster Student Union Building on NIC’s main campus and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday. Visitor parking permits will not be required that week.

Informational session for WINGS program

High school students and parents interested in North Idaho College’s WINGS (dual credit) program are encouraged to attend an information session from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Lake Coeur d’Alene Room of NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building.

The WINGS program, an acronym for WIN by getting a Good Start, gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in NIC classes for both high school and college credit, giving them a head start on their college careers.

The classes are offered at half the cost of normal college credit and are accessible to students, with classes offered via the Internet and through interactive video conferencing as well as through on-site instructors throughout the five northern counties of Idaho.

Although designed for new and prospective dual credit students, the information session may be useful to current students as well.

Registration for continuing students in the WINGS program begins Friday. Registration for all new students will begin Nov. 26.

The information session is free and open to anyone interested.

Scrapbooking held at Seagrave library

COEUR d’ALENE – Family Scrapbooking with Miss Abi begins Tuesday at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library – 702 E. Front Ave. – in the craft area of the Seagrave Children’s Library.

Library Clerk Abi Chase will teach the three-week scrapbooking program 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 20. Bookbinding techniques will be taught the same day and time Nov. 27 through Dec. 11. Bookbinding will be taught by David Townsend, library communications coordinator. All classes are free.
