GSL grabs three state berths
The Greater Spokane League, led by the Mead Panthers, dominated the Columbia Basin League at the 4A regional tournament at Eisenhower and Davis high schools in Yakima on Saturday.
Mead swept the Lewis and Clark Tigers 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 behind the 12 kills and six blocks of Alexis Olgard to win the regional title and advance to state as the No. 1 seed. Lewis and Clark settles for the No. 2 seed. The Shadle Park Highlanders grabbed the third and final seed to state with a 25-13, 25-21, 28-26 win over the University Titans.
The Panthers opened play on the final day of the tourney with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-12 sweep of the Titans. Lewis and Clark began the day with a 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-14 victory over the Highlanders.
All four CBL teams landed in the losers bracket with the Walla Walla Blue Devils ousting the Eisenhower Cadets 25-15, 23-25, 27-25, 25-19 and the Pasco Bulldogs eliminating the Richland Bombers 25-14, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20. Shadle Park booted Walla Walla out of the tourney with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 sweep and University did likewise to Pasco 25-20, 25-18, 25-17.
“At the District 7 2A tournament in Cheney, Meghan Barrington had 11 kills, Allison Oviatt added 16 digs and Kerri Spangenberg tallied 41 assists to power Pullman to a 18-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 win over West Valley for the No. 1 seed to state. WV heads to state as the No. 2 seed. Emilee Lepp totaled 12 kills to lead Colville past Riverside 25-20, 25-15, 26-24 for the No. 3 seed to state. Riverside was eliminated.
“At the 2B regional in Rosalia, Ashley Warnecke had 24 kills and 22 digs and Julie Clark totaled 32 assists to lead Wilbur-Creston to a 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Lind-Ritzville, earning the Wildcats the No. 1 seed to state. The Broncos head to state as the No. 2 seed. W-C advanced to the title match with a 25-19, 26-24, 25-12 win over Northwest Christian and a come-from-behind 19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-12 win over Davenport. Davenport grabbed the No. 3 seed to state with a 25-14, 25-14, 10-25, 26-24 victory over Northwest Christian. NWC heads to state as the No. 4 seed. In earlier matches, Lind-Ritzville beat Dayton 25-15, 25-19, 25-20; Northwest Christian defeated DeSales 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23; Lind-Ritzville topped Pomeroy 25-11, 25-20, 15-25, 25-13; and NWC swept Pomeroy 26-24, 25-18, 25-18. Pomeroy knocked out Springdale and Davenport eliminated DeSales – scores were unavailable.
“At the District 7 1B tournament at Northwest Christian, Kaprina Goodwin notched 23 kills and Remi Dombrowski had 14 digs to lead Northport to a 24-26, 25-21, 25-7, 25-19 win over Odessa for the No. 1 seed to state. Jordan Frederick had 16 digs and Raye Galloway tallied nine blocks to lead Odessa to a 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-15 victory over Cusick for the No. 3 seed to state. Cusick failed to qualify. In earlier matches, Larissa Miller had six kills as Curlew eliminated Almira/Coulee-Hartline 25-21, 25-22, 25-13; Chelsea Treischel piled up 25 assists as Cusick ousted Inchelium 25-11, 25-11, 25-17; Ashley Keogh had 10 kills as Cusick knocked out Curlew 25-19, 25-15, 25-21.
“At the District 9 1B tournament in Colfax, Tekoa-Oakesdale rolled to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 victory over Garfield-Palouse to earn the top seed to state. Garfield-Palouse heads to state as the No. 2 seed. LaCrosse-Washtucna earned the third seed to state with a 25-16, 25-19, 26-24 victory over Touchet. In earlier matches, Touchet eliminated Liberty Christian with a 22-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-13 victory and LaCrosse-Washtucna knocked out Rosalia with a 25-18, 26-28, 25-8, 25-22 win.
“At the 1A regional in Leavenworth, Sadie Lazzarini had 21 kills to lead Colfax to a 15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12 win over Lakeside for the top seed to state. Kelli Tikker notched 27 kills for Lakeside, which will head to state seeded second. Chewelah defeated Chelan in four games to grab the third seed to state. Colfax knocked off Brewster and Freeman en route to the title match.
