Fundraising dinner to benefit family
David Howard was a young man just starting out in life. He starred in wrestling and football while in high school at Timberlake. The 22-year-old died Oct. 23 after being accidentally shot while hunting with friends who mistook him for a deer. He was hunting in the Bayview/Careywood area when one of his friends saw movement and shot. Two lives ruined – one dead way before his time, the other, the shooter, who will have to live with the horror the rest of his life.
While fatal hunting accidents happen seemingly every year, this was close to home. The bulk of his family reside in the Athol/Bayview area.
A fundraising dinner is planned for Nov. 11 at Terry’s Cafe in Bayview. Mexican food will be served for $7.95 starting at 4 p.m. All proceeds will go to the family of David Howard.
Committee discussing emergency preparedness
Bayview’s Emergency Preparedness Committee has been meeting for a few weeks, trying to nail down ways of organizing a proactive response to a neighborhood emergency.
Some potential disasters that worry planners are wildfire either on Cape Horn, or on Blackwell Point on Hudson Bay Road. Both areas are peninsulas and both have dead-end roads with no other way to escape other than by taking to the water.
The landslide on Cape Horn a few years ago is an example of how an emergency, although not life-threatening, can be extremely disruptive. Power outages are common in Bayview, and with the surrounding hills, cell phone service is next to nil. Most homes now have portable phones with a base station that is dependent on electricity, while a hard-wired phone is not.
Committee member Jackie Lloyd said, “With all the new electronic gear out, I think few think of the fact that they cannot use those newfangled phones when we have no power,”
Lloyd urged community members to attend a lecture by Jessica Gary and Sue Welch from the Panhandle Health District. at a town meeting at the Bayview Community Center on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.

Halloween weirdness at the Wheel
Witches, Goblins and weirdness stalked the Captain’s Wheel last Saturday night, as the annual Halloween party got under way. The Red Hat ladies were there in full costume, as well as a very realistic Geico Cave Guy. Some partygoers were witches, though they looked way too nice to have evil designs.
A particularly evil-looking witch won first prize, but there were many great costumes. Because of the well-disguised features, we weren’t sure who was who, but the prize winner was named Sandy.
One fellow had an airline roll case, which was to carry his head in. One of the Red Hatters was a very cute pumpkin. Orange and black was everywhere and the weird just got weirder as the evening wore on. There was a Roman senator, (not Larry Craig) being beguiled by Cleopatra, or perhaps it was the great Caesar himself. Tunes were provided by the band, Comfort Zone.
