Keep trucks off path

The Spokesman-Review

Having been a hiker and bike rider for years, I was delighted to find multi-use paths with riding my bike up on the Five Mile Prairie bluff. There was a two-lane road, a dirt shoulder about 15 feet wide and then the paved trail.

I was happily riding my bike along the path, enjoying the scenery, when I suddenly smashed into the back of a contractor’s trailer hooked to a pickup parked on the path.

I should have been watching where I was going, but I certainly did not anticipate finding a vehicle parked on the trail. I received multiple bruises and broke a finger, which is going to require a splint for eight weeks.

I saw about four vehicles parked on the multi-use trail.

This trail needs signs such as “No Motorized Vehicles,” posts that barricade access to cars and trucks, and a concrete or a shrub barrier preventing vehicles on the road from getting on the bike/pedestrian trail.

It is unclear to me why they could not park on the generous shoulder. We need to make this lovely path usable for joggers, strollers and bikers! Thanks to those who made this path a reality.
