Texas Tech coach receives record fine

The Spokesman-Review

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was fined a record $10,000 by the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday for his harsh criticism of game officials following last week’s loss to Texas.

The fine doubled the previous high by the league, levied twice before, against Kansas coach Mark Mangino three years ago and former Kansas State basketball coach Jim Wooldridge during the 2005-06 season.

“Made my feelings known already, so I don’t have a reaction,” Leach told the AP. “We’ve broke records around here before. We’re used to breaking records.”

After No. 12 Texas beat Texas Tech 59-43 Saturday, Leach condemned the officiating crew in Austin, calling their work “a complete travesty.”

“Coach Leach’s public statements called into question the integrity and competence of game officials and the conference’s officiating program,” Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said.

•Wyoming coach Joe Glenn said the obscene gesture he made toward the Utah sideline during Saturday’s game was “stupid of me” and vowed it would never happen again.

Glenn was reprimanded by the conference, and he apologized in a statement issued through the university Monday and again on Tuesday during the weekly Mountain West Conference coaches’ conference call with media.

•At least two gunshots were fired into the Blacksburg, Va., apartment of a Virginia Tech student that football coach Frank Beamer identified as cornerback Victor Harris. No arrests have been made.

Drug tests for PGA

Starting in July on the PGA Tour, players who register for a tournament could be given a locker, a tee time and a cup to submit a sample for their drug test.

The PGA Tour plans to start its drug-testing program next year with penalties for a positive test ranging from a one-year suspension for the first offense to a lifetime ban if a player is caught three times.

•The PGA Tour decided to put another cup ahead of its own, moving the FedEx Cup finale to the week after the Ryder Cup next year to allow Americans to be fresh as they try to end a decade of losing.

The changes mean there will be a two-week break in the middle of the playoffs.
