Advertising signs

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I went to an estate auction earlier this year and purchased several dozen cardboard display signs that were used in either a grocery or drug store during the 1940s. The signs promote such products as Palmolive soap, cosmetics, Dr. Pepper and Gillette razors. Are they worth much? — Joe, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: Shirley Beck is a nationally known expert who collects tin, cardboard, porcelain and paper advertising signs. She can help you determine the value of your signs. Her contact information is P.O. Box 435, Mediapolis, IA 52637; adman@mepotelco.net; and 319-394-3943.

Q: I recently purchased an older house in Ohio that has a storage room literally piled full of old issues of National Geographic magazines. Where can I peddle them? — Beth, Portsmouth, Ohio

A: Don Smith, who has bought and sold National Geographic magazines for more than three decades, has written a price guide for collectors. It is $12 postpaid and should help you determine the value of your magazines. Keep in mind, however, that a guide is just a guide and not an actual offer. Smith’s address and telephone number are 3930 Rankin St., Louisville, KY 40214, and 502-366-7504.

This book features 900 full-color photos of calendars, serving trays, signs, bottles, paper items, toys and — yes — thermometers.

A: One of the better clubs is the Brewery Collectibles Club of America, 747 Merus Court, Fenton, MO 63026; bcca@bcca.com; www.bcca.com. Don Roussin is a member and is willing to help your cousin.
