Area Roundup: Chapman hands Bucs season-opening loss

Kyle Wood and Dan Aguilar scored 15 points apiece to lead the Chapman men’s basketball team to a 56-53 win over Whitworth in the Pirates’ season opener at the Caltech/Cal Lutheran Classic on Friday in Pasadena, Calif.

Ryan Symes finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Colin Willemsen added 11 points for Whitworth.

The Pirates will play co-host Caltech today at 2 p.m.

“North Idaho beat Salish Kootenai 104-70 in the opening round of the Pepsi Cardinal Classic in Coeur d’Alene.

NIC will play Williston State in the second round today.

Women’s basketball

Khadijah Whittington scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead North Carolina State to a 77-51 win over Washington State in the opening round of the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.

Salena Dickerson had 15 points and Katie Calderwood added 10 to lead the Cougars, who fell to 1-3. The Wolfpack improved to 5-1.

“Katelan Redmon (Lewis and Clark) and Kali Bennett each scored 18 to lead Washington to a 73-57 win over Idaho (0-4) in the opener of the Husky Classic in Seattle.

Sami Whitcomb added 16 points for the Huskies (2-4), who will play Arkansas State (4-1) in Sunday’s championship game.

“Kia Herbel had 13 points and Heidy Bouchard added 10 points and 10 rebounds as Williston State edged CC Spokane 61-56 in the opener of the Pepsi Cardinal Classic at Rolly Williams Court in Coeur d’Alene.

Ashlee Michelson had 13 points and Liz Beardslee added 10 to lead the Sasquatch, who were outscored 31-18 in the second half after leading by eight at halftime.

CCS made just 6 of 26 shots in the second half while Williston State was 9 of 20 and 13 of 14 from the free-throw line.

“North Idaho defeated Casper 62-50 in the other first-round game of the Pepsi Cardinal Classic in Coeur d’Alene.

The Cardinals will play Williston State today.

Hockey

Kimberly scored four goals in the first period and four more in the third to defeat the Spokane Braves 8-6 in a KIJHL game at Kimberly.

Jamie Thompson scored twice to lead Spokane.

Spokane fell to 12-10-3. The Dynamiters are 10-12-3.

Men’s soccer

Ely Allen scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to lift Washington to a 1-0 victory over Portland in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Husky Soccer Field in Seattle.

Washington advances to play at No. 12 UC Santa Barbara in the second round Wednesday.
