Man kills himself in Shoshone jail

An 18-year-old man killed himself Monday in the Shoshone County Jail in Wallace, Idaho.

The teen, who was booked into the jail on Nov. 14, was found unresponsive in his cell about 4:30 p.m., said Larry Callicutt, director of the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections.

Callicutt said he didn’t know if the teen had previously exhibited suicidal behavior.

Teenager killed in hit-and-run named

Rick A. Gomez was the 14-year-old pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run collision early Friday, the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office said Tuesday.

Spokane Valley police continue to seek information on the location of the red Jeep Comanche or Cherokee that they believe struck Gomez.

Evidence indicates the appropriate model years for the Jeep would be late ‘80s to early ‘90s, police said.

The Jeep likely has damage to its front end and right front fender and might have a dented hood, police said.

Anyone with information should call (509) 242-TIPS, or call 911 if the vehicle can be immediately located and seized.

Gomez was a freshman at Central Valley High School.

The high school had counselors available Monday to help students deal with the death, said district spokeswoman Melanie Rose.

Liberty Lake

Police shooting ruled justifiable

A Liberty Lake police officer who wounded a pedestrian during an Oct. 22 confrontation has been cleared of wrongdoing.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office investigated the shooting and announced Tuesday that Officer Taj Wilkerson was justified when he shot 30-year-old Jeffrey T. Ward about 11:10 p.m.

“The prosecutor agreed with our detective that it was a lawful use of force,” said Spokane sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Reagan.

The incident began when Wilkerson encountered Ward walking along Appleway.

“You see someone out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and you stop to talk to them,” Reagan said.

Authorities say Ward then attacked Wilkerson and pinned him between the patrol car door and the car frame. Investigators said he tried to take Wilkerson’s pistol.

Wilkerson fired that pistol during the struggle, hitting Ward in the knee. After treatment, Ward was booked into jail on a charge of third-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.
